My (limited) understanding is Andrew Lee has been a large source of donations to Freenode for many years. As well as a significant benefactor to open source projects and founder of privacy focused services (PIA being one). So this ownership change may be simply an extension of that charity into a formal business arrangement.

I don't know the particulars behind-the-scenes, just trying to not immediately assume the worst.
