I highly recommend Michael Peppiatt's Francis Bacon: Anatomy of an Enigma for anyone interested in Bacon. A lot of a first-hand information on the man, the times.
I much prefer the father of the scientific method Bacon than this one.
They are not really playing in the same ring, nor indeed championing compatible world-views.
That said, I am very fond of older Francis Bacon's book Sylva Sylvarum. It being deliciously on the edge between Natural Philosophy of old and new, emerging, experimental/scientific method.
