I’ve had one for some time now, and I think it’s an absolute steal for a laptop. It blows the new Lenovo netbooks my kids were issued for school out of the water in speed and battery life (also screen quality). I don’t bother bringing my X220 with when we leave town, because this is light and will take care of all the general computing needs. People seem to always want more but at just over $200 shipped, not sure there is enough to complain about. I’m also curious to see Debian release for it this summer.
I wish Drew elaborated a bit more on why ARM is a nightmare. I'd never heard that before - most people seem really excited about ARM.
It's almost like his religious convictions mean he's never heard of this 'M1' thing.
Realistically, I think he's saying "Linux on anything other than x86 is a dumpster fire", which is fair.
Cool, when will Alpine support the M1 thing?
Rather than the instruction set, I assume he's referring to the lack of a standardised boot process, which wasn't addressed until recently. Lots of single board computers out there that don't have upstream Linux support due to badly made firmware, device trees, and other weirdness.
Although I agree that this is the likely reason, it is a bit outdated. ARM made a standardized boot requirements document last year, it's now up to the SoCs to implement it.
Yeah it's why I say "which wasn't addressed until recently"
