I hate how media groups all negative technological behavior as hacking. She abused her mother’s account which seemed to have more access than required. She didn’t hack anything.

Agreed, but I think we have to accept that the mainstream definition of hacking is, "doing something you aren't allowed to do to a computer or computer system."

I think it is worse than that - it is bullshit conflation meaning games so they can charge for something not allowed and demonize them as scary figures.

I mean, it's stupid and petty, and she should be punished, but multiple felonies? I could see it if she'd tampered with grades, dropped the db, etc. But cheating to be Homecoming Queen seems pathetic enough to almost be its own punishment...

Modern public school systems have close ties to law enforcement. What used to be children acting like... children, is now rigorously tried in the justice system by DAs who will do anything to "win."

The public school to prison pipeline is real. None of my children have or will go to public school. It's worthless at its best. It's life ruining at its worst. This is only one example of public schools flaunting how petty and stupid they are.

A public school system reflects its community. I have known kids who have received excellent schooling in public schools. In general, this has meant that they lived in prosperous districts.

Honestly, what the fuck?

This isn't hacking or harming others, this is punishing a child with legal felonies for stuffing a ballot box.

Were there any actual adults in the room when they decided to ruin her life like this?

Computer crimes are over punished in our justice system. Remember when a guy who hacked a Facebook page to obtain evidence of rapists received a longer sentence than the rapists?

Who is this individual truly hurting? Do they deserve capital punishment, possible jail time, ruining any future jobs or prospects because she stuffed a ballot box?

Would you want the same federal charges brought if it was a physical ballot box with paper?

This is a crazy overreaction. Should be a misdemeanor with like a fine, max.
