It looks cute and all, but... you can't beat sailing with real weather!

So many steps I just want to see it

That sail sim site is great. You can create a race anywhere to anywhere (on the water.) it's all accessible through your Web browser. races across a sound, or around the World.

pro-tip checkout this project if you want some help making turns overnight in your timezone on a long race. https://github.com/ghislain-l/gpilot

That's a really nice thing you got there. Really cool.

That looks fantastic.

I've been sailing on this game for nearly a year. I've done around the world 3 times. It's a fantastic group of people in the game and on IRC. I recommend definitely recommend it.

A touch confusing. This isn't VR as far as I can see. I saw this and assumed it was:

> VR Dashboard

but apparently stands for "Virtual Regatta" but I'm not going to be the only person that finds it confusing when there are several "actual" VR Sailing apps including: https://store.steampowered.com/app/468240/VR_Regatta__The_Sa...

I agree that it’s confusing. But Virtual Regatta has been around since 2006 and is probably the most prominent online sail racing community after SailX dissolved due to malicious hacks.

Ah. Fair enough then.

Virtual Skipper 5 is better

A VR (virtual reality) version would be nice, and in that case VR-induced nausea would be a feature, not a bug.

Back in the mid-1980s I recall playing a sailing game -- Wooden Ships And Iron Men" -- on the BSD-4.2 based Stride "supermicro" (68000 CPU, 80MB hard drive, can't remember memory). It was a multiplayer battle game simulating 18th century sailing ships and their arms and armour. Weather was constantly changing, and you certainly had to take into account wind, sea-state, time of day, different sorts of ammunition you might prime your guns with, etc. And all that on a (well, a few) 40x80 ascii terminal(s)!

Very challenging and entertaining game. Always wondered why the theme/code was never expanded upon using modern hardware and software.

PC Building simulator made me want a game like this.

The author has some other really interesting projects as well. I encourage you to checkout their GitHub page.

I haven't had a chance to dig into this, but obviously it's awesome and I'm here for it!

You should also try Virtual Skipper 5
