I once had a chat with a psychiatrist who started their own practice after working as director of a rehab facility for several years...

I shared with them an idea I had at the time about the "usefulness" of drugs in terms of how much more productive or creative they make someone vs. how much damage they do to the body, putting them into a two-dimensional plane like the political matrix.

Surprisingly, they told me that for every individual, they could place the same drugs into different quadrants on that plane.

I'm reading this now and while I already understood a lot of what he's talking about, the rest of what he's saying is the only complete, serious, logical take on human drug use I've ever read. Highly, highly recommend this.

Can't read with the paywall, and this is probably contrary to the message of the article, but this interview (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6ZFzEW7_Q4) with a homeless heroin adict made a great impression on me. He comes off as both extremely self-aware and honest.
