I've found this paper interesting, as while there is a lot of discussion of number of deaths from covid-19, a common concern/theory is whether many of elderly are primarily dying from other underlying causes. This paper actually computes the number of live year lost, and interestingly it turns out that a largest number of those is for ages between 55-75. Overall I think the years of live lost is probably more helpful statistic than excess mortality for example.
