Exactly what I was thinking. In what way is this reliable? Using age is the most logical approach compared to this lazy idea.

I have been wondering the same thing. I would have thought the oleo strut would have all the moving parts you would need for such a gauge, lacking only a position sensor (perhaps temerature-compensated.)

Not only would you get weight, but also the center of gravity location, which can be deadly if out of limits.
