Ask HN: What's on Your Start Page?
Currently, I have:
SEARCH Custom Duck Duck Go search box - defaults to local neighborhood, then everything. Links to search engines - Wilby, Million Short...
MAGAZINES Magazines and new information sources - like HN, Psyche, Nautilus, JSTOR, etc.
ENVIRONMENTAL DATA Environmental - NOAA (sun, space weather) Local weather - it's usually rain for nine months, and then drought for three. But I like the nuances. Earthquake - I'm in the Puget Sound ADBS & Marine Traffic - Military bases, shipping lanes nearby. One-click fun to see what's floating by.
IMPORTANT EVENTS C-SPAN, NPR, NYT - I don't do news, but like to have links in case something !@! happens.
RADIO STATIONS WFMU, WMFO, WEEU, WXAC, etc. Tiny AM stations from Wyoming to Oklahoma have the best country music and on-air garage sales. Couple web hosted RTL-SDR sites...
GOPHER / GEMINI Gemini - Links to favorite sites like Gopherpedia and others.
LIBRARY Bibliocommons, local and city sites, and subsites. Very heavy library user, several times a day.
SERVERS & PROJECTS localhost ports for site dev Links to sites I have to monitor
My design is traditional two-column Yahoo! circa 1998. I'm always surprised how comfortable and easy it is to use. It was supposed to be a joke on myself, but I haven't had any inclination to change in three years. No images, black text on a dried mustard yellow.
So, I'm interested in how others utilize the start page. Specifically:
* Reminders, calendar?
* Tools or information sources?
* RSS or not - I use my email client now
* How do you manage / update your start page?
* Layout ideas, formats, templates...
* Images from your archives?
* Quote or fact of the day?
* Other categories, uses, purposes?
Thank you for sharing.
