A common tale in Australian colonisation is death in the face of plenty: the colonists alienated the indigenous and were unable to ask, or be told, or accept the food around them.

Some of the things said in this piece go to the same place: they didn't adapt to inuit seafood methods. Odd, given the strong link to seafaring but cultures can be like that: Rick Stein often comments that you can't get fish and chips in a fisherman's cafe.

A good portion of Jared Diamond's Collapse covers the history and decline of the Greenland settlements. It's a worthwhile read.
