China now generates 54 percent of the world's coal-fired electricity

China is very interested in mass producing solar cells, wind turbines and other tradeables for the export market, as well as using them internally. They need electricity from whatever source they can get it. Black coal, brown coal, it doesn't matter, it all goes into the furnace to fuel an energy hungry nation with few petroleum and natural gas reserves. It is a very rational energy policy that puts the strategic needs of China front and center.
