I don't think that the author was expressing his astonishment with the fact that Netflix is threatening cable. He was just reporting the findings of a new study which show hard evidence. In fact, he states that "this jibes with both common sense and other anecdotal evidence we’ve seen.", so he's clearly not surprised.
