How well does this work compared to AirDrop?

AirDrop was hopeless when first released, then I didn't even try it for a few years. Two years ago it worked well a couple of times when I needed it, but last week it didn't work.

Hardly scientific, but the point is that AirDrop is one of those things I'm aware of as being available in my Apple-centric household. But experiences have turned "send it over AirDrop" into a go-to "talk to the hand" joke between myself and my SO.
