It’s not just an issue for hobbyist programmers. That’s also an issue for most startups and small companies. You just can’t buy all the documents you need when you’re designing hardware. That stuff is insane. And it’s not just about the cost, it’s also about the time necessary to buy these documents. Creates way too much friction compared to the open model of the IETF, W3C, Unicode Consortium, etc. The ISO and other organisms using paywalls live in the past and are hurting innovation.
