.ws TLD Completely Offline

The entire .ws TLD appears to be offline with no explanation as to why and no timeline for it to return.

This has been an ongoing issue in the last few weeks to the point where we had to move production systems away from .ws to another TLD to keep thingns running. See: https://twitter.com/OhNoItsFusl/status/1350119705189748742?s...

Are you sure it's not just your corporate firewall blocking the whole tld? I've seen it done, since .ws domains are cheap and rarely seen, it's usually a phishing page. And so some IT departments block it.

I'm curious if anyone on HN has any idea what's going on. It seems crazy to me to lose an entire TLD in 2021. The most I could get in my searches was "unplanned maintenance".

TLD is back online now. I'm guessing in the interim your TTL was long enough to survive the outage.

This happened yesterday morning also, DNS queries to .ws domains would result in NXDOMAIN. It also seemed intermittent - some clients would resolve names, some would not.

Edit: See also this thread on CloudFlare: https://community.cloudflare.com/t/certain-broadband-provide.... It appears the TLD DNS servers for .ws are having issues.

This highlights one reason why you would want to have your own TLD on Handshake [1] instead of a leased subdomain. This way you aren’t subject to the uptime of another.
