Is anyone aware of a way to be alerted if we are using such extension? A sort of anti-virus for extensions if you will.
My personal policy is that if an extension doesn't have a very limited scope (for example adblockers that need full access to everything), it has to be open source and I'll install it from source to control when extensions are updated.
The only adblocker I’ll install is Privacy Badger from EFF. If the EFF starts injecting malware, I think I’ll go ahead and stop using the internet and move to a cabin in the woods.
Privacy Badger isn’t an adblocker but an anti-tracker. Even the developers of Privacy Badger probably assume that you will be running their plugin alongside uBlock Origin.
True, but since most ads are also trackers, it does a decent enough job for me.
DNS-based adblocking (like Pihole, NextDNS etc.) works well in this scenario, nothing installed locally.
do you use it? how's the success rate so far?
lots of web properties now serve ads from origin, blockindg dns might not help with that?
Not real time. I MITM all my connections in squid and log all requests, so at very least I can look back at my daily logs and see if anything sticks out. Most of the time I am just looking at HIT/MISS ratios but I do sometimes find odd requests that usually turn out to be some embeded link in a page. What I won't see is any POST data contents unless I already have the dev console open.
Both firefox and chrome have addon blocklists for that exact purpose.
