I reading the sentence you mean Storage rather than Memory?
I had countless customers ask me with their shiny new Samsung/Sony device that they have ran out of storage because they cant or don't know how to save images to their SD card. Or some versions wouldn't even allow you to save certain system files, applications or games to the SD card that was locked to the device.
If you want a device with an SD card because you need expandable memory, then you are not the majority of customers.
You could also try to leave that screen on for a few min, close that screen and reopen it again. They are most likely Apps, or Apps cache that wasn't calculated when you first use that screen.
There is also the iMessage bomb and iCloud Photo bug. But those were a long time ago and I haven't heard about it for years.
So yes best to do Factory Reset. And I know it is a pain. I have lots of people around me who just refuse to update apps and iOS anymore. ( But Apple is now actively courting them to do so )

ETA: Also, there's the "unsexy" but increasingly common boring consumer stuff like Face ID and Portrait Mode and Smart Action Camera Auto-Focus that you mostly stop noticing how it works (if you ever notice it other than assuming it is a magic black box) so long as it works.
It would be super neat if they added some sort of 3d image/video capture. I would love to start taking 3d videos now, that I'll be able to enjoy on my cheap 3d picture frame, in the future.
This is pretty much what a 'Portrait mode' photo is... it's the regular photo plus a depth mode. And on the iPhones with lidar, the depth map is way more accurate. There are various apps that let you visualise the photo in 3D (I've used Focos before).
Can be done in video too [0], but last I checked it would only stream at 320x240, probably because it's still rather compute-intensive. Don't know if that's improved on the lidar-possessing devices.
