Ask HN: What is the iMessage protocol?

Many developers now have iOS 5 running. Can one of you attach tcpdump/Wireshark appropriately and get some idea of what the iMessage protocol looks like?

Is it running something like XMPP underneath? Is it likely to be able to interoperate with other clients on non-iOS-devices?
