That sky crane shot blows my mind. Knowing conceptually how sky crane works and that it does work autonomously is crazy but then seeing a picture makes it even more real.

It's been almost a full day now, I wonder why they don't have a nice big HD photo from the main camera.

Bootup / checkout for a rover takes longer than you might think. Day 1-3 are probably (I have no special information) verification activities and "commissioning". Some of that will involve taking images, yes, but it'll take time. Watch for them to say the mast is unstowed / operational. That has the images you've come to expect.

I put my cat in. I think she's finally found the litter box of her dreams.

My cat hated the beach.

I guess there are limits to what a single feline can handle in terms of litter box size.

My wife and I took our cat to the vet for the last time on Inauguration Day (sad face). I put a picture of our cat in, and it came out well enough that I'm going to print it out and put it on our fridge.

This is cool as well: https://mars.nasa.gov/participate/send-your-name/

You get your name electron-beamed onto a chip that is added to the spaceship and sent to Mars. My daughter was extra excited watch the landing yesterday knowing her name (along with 10m others) was etched onto Perseverance.

Hopefully Little Bobby Tables did not participate.

My son as well! And me too ;)

In case you were hoping to find the first image from the Perserverance mission, you can see it here:

THe image is not great, but the fact that we do have a first image is just awsome.

They told me they are gonna reveal an HD video of the reentry in a "few hours" (of the landing)--still not here. Still waiting for that.

Serious question -- is it still called "reentry" if it's entering a different atmosphere than it started from...?

touche haha

There's this photo of the rover being lowered to the surface:

I am not sure where you might've heard that but the video is not expected for a couple weeks as they indicated prior to landing. Right now the team would be downlinking the thumbnails from the various cameras during the descent. Afterwards they will be selecting photos that are of immediate interest before requesting the remaining set for downlink, processing them, and compiling them into a video.

AccessDenied/Request has expired

These are short-living signed URLs, not for sharing as links. :)

Huh, it's pretty good at lassoing the intended subject. Even picks out a computer rendered vehicle well: https://xhroot.s3.amazonaws.com/roci.png Original here: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=86940...

The rover needs a tiktok

Also the helicopter!

Because if you didn't take a selfie, you were never really there.

I am always wary of these websites that ask you to upload a photo so they can add some cool effect. Most of the time they don't have a clear privacy policy and who knows what the owners will do with everything uploaded. This is a little different because it is run by NASA and we can probably be confident they won't do something nefarious with it. However it did get me thinking if one could submit a FOIA request and get all the photos that have been uploaded.

I think most of the reply pages of that FOIA request will be black or white boxes, with redacted written over it.

They don't say anything about what happens to the photos, but the site warns you to download your photo before closing the browser because the photo is part of your session. They then suggest if you want to share it publicly to use the hashtag #CountdownToMars with links to social media sites.

To people saying its silly or dumb. If these "selfies" get posted on Facebook and such it will start a conversation. Possibly spark interest. Which is good for space exploration (and funding).

NASA and JPL are customers of ours. Used the Photo Booth and added our company photo, came out great. Fun way to celebrate a great accomplishment.

It's been a day, and all we have are 3 bad jpegs?

They're obviously not going to post the ones with the Decepticons in the background.

Dumb.

Getting families and children interested in science and engineering is one of the most important imperatives for any nation that wants to invest in its future.

Outreach, apart from science objectives, is a large and important objective for NASA.

Ah NASA, the living example of how cushy government jobs lead to lethargy.
