- Use -site:example.com to exclude some sites

- Consider using PMAlerts, which for some sites (like HN, Twitter, Reddit) is better than Google Alerts (but for some worse)

- Follow advice the PMAlerts creator wrote down on his blog wrt. strategically composing alert queries. It also works for Google Alerts to a degree.
