The effect of that is, I get more ideas and solutions to the problem(s) but get very little done as the hands don't keep up with the speed of the racing mind. And untimately there is huge gap between what the mind wants to do and what the hands are working at.
Just a hypothesis :)
They shouldn't have to. The typical number of lines a programmer writes in a day is so small, typing speed is not the issue. And the ideas/features implemented in a regular day are even less, even if you're Linus or Carmack.
If your mind is racing, it's probably just as a way to avoid doing the hard work (making even one idea concrete), rather than "too many ideas, too little time to type them". Ideas, after all, are a dime a dozen.
Switch to COLEMAK.
Do speed punching drills.
:)
It is not about the keyboard. If the mind is busy pacing ahead then it slows down the task at hand.
Doing something athletic you get hurt that way.
Many of my strange behaviors are like this: I might want to be in a room at 70F but I have a choice of a 50F and 90F room so I just move from one to another. Rather than being focused on one thing I flit between a few different things to manage my homeostasis.
(e.g. this is problematic if the "temperature" is the temperature of relationship you have with someone, or if you get hit by the ball because you spend 20 seconds focused on your "inner life" after feeling uncomfortable spending 40 seconds watching what seems like Brownian motion)
From stress I was grinding my teeth and messed up my jaw, getting a bite guard was life-changing, but now I am using the one treatment for TMD which is backed up by the literature: biofeedback.
The pain really does go away if I relax my Masseter muscles: relaxing in general is good, but those specific muscles are the real goal. I would start with this theory of meditation

as the most general, but note that I turn my attention specifically on to the level of tension in that muscle that I am experiencing right now. I could have used something of this type

but often I can find the sensory nerves I'm looking for without machines. (e.g. if you are quiet you can feel your heartbeat)
So meditiation-relaxation-biofeedback is one toolbox to look at.
Another one is the Pomodoro method which formalizes the "back-and-forth" where you take timed breaks to give you some time to recharge.
