How different is botnet software engineering from other types of software engineering? I mean, that Perl program that IRC botnets are made of gets constantly reworked in-the-wild, as does the WSO web shell. But there's virtually no barrier to entry into those fields of software engineering. Large botnets are another matter - they have to be built up and maintained, and there's clearly an arms race with between the botnet people and security vendors.
