The scammers keep changing their tactics in response by efforts by twitter to curtail the problem. The main issue is, the scam is too profitable, so this means scammers have great incentive to persist. look the wallet addresses. Scammers are making $100k/hour from this. Never before has it been possible to make much money in so little time without any of the usual consequences of crime. Even drug dealers cannot make this kind of $ easily, and there is the whole aspect of being killed in a drug deal. I would go so far as to call it a historic first. It is literally the perfect crime.
The US govt. should req. twitter hire people to manually delete crypto scams , whatever the algos are unable to catch, and reimburse the labor costs.
This is potentially a bigger problem than anyone can imagine and I think requires a national response, much like the war on drugs, if crypto gains mainstream adoption. If supposedly savvy internet users are falling for this by the droves even after significant media coverage of the July hack, what hope is there for everyone else.
These scams have netted about $50 million total since 2018 according to analytics firms through a combination of YouTube and twitter. This value taken keeps rising as bitcoin keeps rising. I can imagine scammers not only hacking more accounts but targeting radio and tv markets too. Also we can expect more hacks similar to the July 2020 hack, to spread this scam. Fraudulent crypto giveaways alone could become a $100 million-$1 billion dollar a year industry by 2023.
