If you read the book, skip the forward. It gives away a lot of details about the rest of the book. Nothing major, but there are a few notes that I wish I hadn't known ahead of time.
The forward is nice, but I think it is better to read after you've completed the collection.
Didion would have been far too clever to fall into this predictable culture war crap.
