Absolutely embarrassing. Are we seriously at a point now where we can't have a George Washington or Abraham Lincoln High School?

What's next? Renaming our nation's Capital?

I’m not American, so please excuse if this is an ignorant question - didn’t Lincoln abolish slavery? What did he do to get his name taken off of schools?

He would have preferred that the emancipated slaves return to Africa.

You can believe slavery is an abomination, while at the same time have views which might widely be considered racist even by today's most colloquial standards.

That said, this is beyond ridiculous.

There might be something to all of this, but the manner in which it is conducted: underhanded, without popular support, is indicative of the authoritarian tendencies of these groups. It's a form of intellectual violence.

Agreed. I also wonder if this kind of article is towards the edge of allowable content on HN regardless of title: it's a politically-charged current-affairs article that isn't particularly intellectually gratifying.

Sometimes good discussion comes from these kinds of articles -- but I feel that's somewhat uncommon.

I'm always confused at the disdain for Lincoln. You'd think someone known as "The Great Emancipator" would be kosher.
