Solarwinds hack explained in detail by a software engineer

The question to my mind is why the perpetrators chose to target FireEye. Clearly they were being super careful. Going after FireEye was going after a group for whom security is not an after thought - the others - even Microsoft and the NSA - do something plus worry about security.

I imagine there's someone getting reamed out right now for spoiling the game. That someone either approved or started the idea of trying to break into FireEye. Either they got cocky or they got cheap. If its the later what exactly does that say - because my assumption is that they went after FireEye not because of anything FireEye had but because FireEye had tools and methods that the perpetrator didn't think they could either buy or develop.

Which goes back to being cheap or cocky. Either way though I bet someone got a ding on their permanent record.
