Ask HN: What's your workflow from digital camera to printed/published photo?

I'm fed up with paying for Adobe Creative Cloud, but it's the best single thing I've used so far for importing, organising, editing and printing/uploading photos from my DSLR.

I'd love to try something else, FOSS or not. Any suggestions?

I am in the process of switching from Lightroom to Darktable [1]. Lightroom seems to have better lens aberration fixing algorithms but I'm still learning Darktable, so, I might be doing something wrong.

Also, I do miss the styles selection from LR... There is a community around Darktable styles [2], but it doesn't seem to cover everything LR does.

On the bright side, Darktable seems very very fast (compared to LR) and the overall process (when you know what to do) is really satisfying.

As a photographer using Darktable professionally, I find the lens correction from Darktable better than the ones from Lightroom — which I stopped using for good early last year —, but it may differ from camera to camera. The Fuji X-T3 I use already does a lot of correction by itself.

I am not sure if you know this, but I guess it does not hurt to say it: if you are on Linux, you may need to update the Lensfun's database used by Darktable, as they are separate things for some reason.

Assuming you have the liblensfun-bin package installed, just run lensfun-update-data to update the database for your user, or sudo lensfun-update-data to update it system-wide.

No idea how this work for other platforms.

Thanks a lot for these tips, I didn't know about the separate update of the lens database.

I am on Linux, yes, trying to get rid of the need to power up the MBP.

Edit: I'm using Nikon D700 and the "not so good" lens algorithm was for the 16-85 lens... LR seems to take better care of it, but I'll try with the updated lens DB in Darktable.
