Emacs is its own ecosystem, you either buy it all, and grow to use it more and more, or don't get to use it all. So in a way it separates itself from the rest of Unix ecosystem.
Only because much of what emacs does is cumbersome or impossible as regular software.
a lock-in is a lock-in, even if with free software, it incurs certain costs on you, even if it provides convenience.
