That's not quite accurate. I think privacy/anonymity were up-front concerns with the design. Satoshi mentions a partition between identity and transactions/ledger. Unfortunately, as we all know, once the identity is leaked for a single transaction, it can be traced throughout the ledger. In practice, many/most transactions do include some identity leakage.
