Sounds like she was also attracted to despicable human beings as well.
Of course they "adored" him. That's how you act around a dictator, because you'll be tossed in the gulags if you don't--often, your family too.
But to a person like Sartre who subscribes to the maxim that 'morality [...] is but a bourgeois pretension" in the words of one of his intellectual sources, I find more sympathy for him than the grave crime of.. grooming adult students and the ambitions of a New Yorker journalist feeling like he's blowing the lid of the sordid lives of the philosophers. By these words we hang de Beauvoir in a weird game of cancel culture to own the literati because we clicked on an article from 2005 in an American paper.
BTW it is not "proto sex-positive feminism". They were very late to the game. You can go back to the free love movements of the late 19th century. Whole communities were based on it (and failed) here in the good ol' US of A. Bernard Shaw had a keen interest in these ideas too.

Simone de Beauvoirs underwriting the Matzneff letter is well documented. Grooming of adolescents is discussed in the posted New Yorker article. I don't have a grasp of Simone de Beauvoir, but I object to the website. I am appalled by the sidebar suggested content. Predatory behaviour aside, framing the author fits the agenda of an anti-intellectual outlet.
