How on earth does saying the word "I" correlate to self obsession? It's an incredibly generic, flexible, common, context-sensitive word.
His speeches always have had a ton of “I”s, it was always something that I noticed and was part of the reason his speeches were always so boring to me (except that one hilarious White House correspondence dinner which was probably written by a comedian). Even when he’s taking about something other than himself, there’s a lot of “I”.
He probably just uses 'I' a lot because someone else is hogging all the best words.
"Speaking from the I" is a technique to give prescriptive advice without giving prescriptive advice.
