But I mean I could probably make a similar raspberry pi build for around the same money and have a more powerful machine capable of doing much the same things and would have the experience of a hacking out a build.

No, you couldn't. Have you even skimmed over the features it has?

Since you clearly know, what can't they do with a DIY thing this can?
