A rather common joke that I've seen on social media and also have personally witnessed in real life is that within the US, the person making the comparison is of one race and has difficulty accurately comparing a person of a different race with the picture supposedly of that person.

Consequently, two people who don't really look alike can essentially share the same ID card as the person doing the comparing doesn't want to invite accusations of racism.

Which is the easiest thing to change, and no different in this implementation.

It's cryptographically signed by the issuing authority. Nothing can be changed...?

The picture is signed? In any case, using an older sibling's ID still works about as good as ever.

I haven't read the exact spec myself, but I'd be extremely surprised if it wasn't. Unfortunately tech can't solve the problem of doppelgangers without going into biometry, which might be a bit of an overstep for simple ID purposes.

Right, like this whole effort. A bit of an overstep for simple ID purposes, when fundamentally it still depends on somebody looking at the picture and making a call.
