Scaleway launches cloud instances that cost $2.10 per month

They recently bumped the price for the basic DEV1-S up to €4,99 and I know a lot of hobbyists like myself have been cutting down on their instances because of that. For a business this difference is nothing but for a private person it adds up especially if it's not running anything super important. Especially because we have to pay VAT. And their prices don't include an IP which is €1 per month extra. All peanuts but for a hobbyist it adds up.
I think this is an attempt to rekindle themselves with the hobbyist market, and it worked, I'm really happy with this! :D Of course many hobbyists work in IT too, so it's a smart move to get into the hearts and minds of IT pros.
By the way I'm very happy with Scaleway, their support is excellent and you can just ping them on Slack if you have questions. I expected they'd behave more like a 'big company' as they grew bigger (like what happened to DigitalOcean which I used before), but this didn't happen. They still have the customer-first approach of a startup, and they don't look down on the little guy.
Maybe you've gotten lucky? We left them for Digital Ocean ~9 months ago.
When using Scaleway, they migrated some of our (and other peoples) public servers without telling customers.
That changed some of the public and private IP(v6?) addressing for those servers. The public address change meant our users could no longer access them, and the private address changes meant the firewalls on our other servers stopped them connecting to anything.
Thankfully, our monitoring system alerted us, but for over 24 hours (!) Scaleway's support didn't answer any of our (frantic, high priority) support questions asking why some of our VM's suddenly had new addresses.
Their support also claimed migrations don't change any public addresses.
So the whole "people suddenly can't access our servers" and "oh look, they can again now after I updated DNS"... must have been my imagination then? Frigging morons
When I asked them to please at least update their processes to include "notify customers when migrating their servers", they just responded with the equivalent of "yeah, sure, we'll think about it".
Then there was the time they locked our entire account during a server migration, because one of our team members also had a personal account with them with an overdue bill. For about 2.99 Euros (from memory). Their support wouldn't give us any details of which team member, what was going on, (etc). Took hours to go through process of elimination, and again more than a day to get our account unlocked.
We have many more Scaleway stories of incompetence. Not just from their technical staff, but also their accounts team, credit card payment people, etc.
From my perspective, avoid them if you've any choice at all in the matter.
Seriously, FK Scaleway and the horse they rode in on. :( :(
I only have experience with them on a personal basis, and I found them easy to reach on slack. I had some issues with the nbd-style filesystem on the old VPSes (and dedicated servers) and they were really helpful.
But I've only had personal stuff with them.
They said - cutting-and-pasting from the email - "Please remimber to avoid a such new situation like that. We wont be so tolerant the next time.".
Well, lesson 100% definitely f#@king learned all right. :(
Probably not the one they meant though. ;)
Even more ironically, was until that point I'd personally been porting various OSS projects to ARM64, and assisting others in doing so, in order to help bring customers to Scaleway.
Which completely and utterly ceased right then.
Yes, I'm still pissed off about them. ;)
Only thing I do miss is that their console doesn't work on Firefox :( But I just use chrome in those edge cases where I need it.
