Can someone please explain to me how subscriptions work on Substack?

I just spent 5 minutes clicking around and still can't figure it out. How much is it? Where does my money go?

Reading a piece on Substack then clicking "Subscribe" only to have them demand my email address with no additional info is really off-putting.
