It's not that there were no usable WYSIWYG word processors, but even the star of the show (AmiPro) was rather limited in its feature set compared to WordPerfect, and they were really competitors to LetterPerfect and the like: great for simple text editing, but templating, macros, and so forth were toys at best - and you really needed to pay close attention to the maxim "the computer you want costs $5000 and will be obsolete when delivered" if you didn't want to type too far ahead of the screen.
