DHS Buying Moment-by-Moment Geolocation Cellphone Data to Track People

I wish mobile OSes provided an API for putting the phone into / out of Airplane Mode. It used to be available to unrooted Android phones until version 4.2.2 which broke some apps[0].

In theory it would then be possible for an app to take the phone out of Airplane Mode (to receive a call) when it received a specific ping over a different radio protocol, such as Wi-Fi or perhaps even FM.

Also, I'm surprised that not giving users full control over when they broadcast their effective location to the mobile phone network isn't a GDPR violation.

90% of that cellphone data is Google based. . . so, Google is participating in this destruction of privacy, just another reason for trustbusting of Google.
