Pardon implies 2 things: (1) you are now guilty and (2) you can't invoke the 5th when testifying.

The inability to invoke the 5th means that every question has to be answered (truthfully or you end up with a new charge). A pardon means that some secrets can be revealed.

If Trump pardons himself he loses all 5th amendment protection.
