The idea is to take AI from a “Wow!” state to an “Oh wow!” state for the general public. And the only way to do that is to provide the opportunity for average people to play and, more importantly, to build. When people build their first “autonomous brain machine”, at even a rudimentary level, it goes from “Isn’t that cool!” to “I made fire!” That’s a very important leap.
The sooner AI becomes real to the general population, the sooner important public discussions about its role in modern society can occur in the general population...
