When you send your Mac to Apple Support, it is assumed that no technician is able to peep at your data, as T2 provide encrypted storage on SSD. With this loop hole, your data is wide open eg when your Mac die before you can wipe your data. Apple often would replace the whole Mac, including new SSD for you. Those who skip FileVault might want to reconsider.
