For me as a use of such forums in the past, one extremely important thing is to search past discussions in order to find the quick insights that I need. Someone recently posted that there is a trend of communities moving questions from stack overflow to GitHub issues since finding related answers is often nowadays not about ”in javascript, go do I...?” but more like ”with npm lib, how do I...?” so problem searches has become much more specific than 10 years ago especially in the js world.
I find in the search sense that forums are much better because they are separated by topic and not only by channels, the tag equivalents used in forums.
Is the chat more a trendy thing that came along with the fame of slack, discord? or is there really some value to be gained from sync / real time conversations?
