Tesla Tire Costs 10× Battery Cost, & My Plan to Deflate Tire Costs 90%

I had to read that headline about 10 times before I kind of understood what it was saying. Reading the article helped though.

Tire costs probably aren’t thought of because all cars need tires and consumers are used to paying for them.

In only got 19k out of the stock Model 3 tires. Nobody will get 40k with the weight of the car and the regen. His math is way off, tires are much more expensive than he projects

Are car trains popular in the US? I see there exists such a service at https://www.amtrak.com/auto-train . You drive the automobile to a train carriage, go to bed in the train in a sleeper cabin, wake up near your destination and drive off.

They are somewhat popular here for getting from the south of Finland to Lapland. You don't need to drive the whole way but you have your car at the destination and can pack everything to the car. 1000 km takes about 10 hours by train. (I've never used one.)

Wow really good points. And if anyone is willing to literally rethink and reinvent the wheel, Musk is bold/crazy enough to take on the giants with their patents that stifle innovation.

A lot of this isn’t even changing the tire itself, but the economics surrounding it.

I’d be interested to know what the costs were if you just got sensible tires instead of those designed for speed.

For the vast majority of people 0-60, etc aren’t the most important part of a car. Going from A->B without losing traction at normal driving speeds are what matters.
