Ahh yes, our rights may be being eroded away, but at least a few people "silently protested" while it happened! That will really show the state not to mess with us!

peaceful protests get ridiculed as weak/ineffectual while even mildly active protests are called riots and savagery, what the hell is anyone to do?

You vote and convince others that your viewpoint is valid. Writing to your representative is a very real option.

If enough people do it, they gain independence (India, Poland) or civil rights MLK.

And because those protests are non-violent, and almost always the protestors suffer. They get the moral high-ground and people believing in cause rally around the protest and not extremist who want to burn down something.

Imagine any example I gave was a violent protest ending up as bloody conflict. How would any of them end up?
