RTX 3090 has been purposely nerfed by Nvidia at driver level for AI training

This kind of stuff is infuriating just on the "right to own stuff" level. The thing is, I'd like to do general purpose gpu computing. Not conventional AI at all but if it has a driver that nerf some things, that gives me... pause. What is being nerfed and how. Nvidia's proprietary drivers for Linux are already annoying. The spirit of "we'll be screwing each device for anything but what we consider it's purpose" just rankles.

Welcome to market segmentation, where the company takes a crowbar to your device based on how much you want to pay. This is the type of industrial process that ruins life for everyone.

Then again, that's the price you pay for proprietary drivers. I hate it, everyone else hates it, but if you can't get access to the schemata/docs you need to write the driver yourself, that's where you end up. Interesting question though: how much would they sell the documentation, hardware and no NDA for?

Bet they wouldn't, but it's an interesting question.

Haven't they been doing this for a while? I remember a few years ago the server grade GPU was the same as a Titan but unlocked low precision units for a few thousand dollars extra.
