(1) impediments shouldn't fester for a significant fraction of a day, and usually don't require synchronous team-wide communication.
(2) stand-ups inevitably, even if timeboxed effectively, become either rambling or ritualized status meetings, because people very quickly learn how to resolve, or at least surface and start working to resolve, impediments without waiting for them.
