A better title would be: Basing your self-worth on financial success can lead to loneliness.

According to the study co-author Lora Park:

"When people base their self-worth on financial success, they experience feelings of pressure and a lack of autonomy, which are associated with negative social outcomes"

So can financial failure, I would presume.

Growing up very poor, I feel like I'm not speaking from an ivory tower: struggling financially causes you to lean more heavily on your personal relationships.

If you started your life very poor, you didn't fail.

Now imagine that you started your life very rich, and lost everything; asking for help would expose your financial "failure" to everyone.
