If you're interested in this sort of thing, check out the R-score used by CEGEPs in Quebec. It takes into account how well you did relative to the average, what the standard deviation of that average was (the lower the standard deviation, the more significant your deviation from the average is), and then how strong the group of student that made up that average was (group strength is based on students results from standardized exams taken in grades 10 & 11).
