I just bout my first house a year ago. Mortgage is around 22% of take home income. Granted I never asked what mortgage I was approved for and can guarantee you it would have been at least double what I purchased

Where did you buy though? Bay Area has incredibly high prices.

If you buy a house, this situation is hopefully only temporary. If you rent, this will just keep going or get even worse.

Most financial advice and even some loan approval is based on only 25% of income going towards housing.
