IDFA is some sort of unique user id, used to track behavior across apps. The new iOS requires explicit user permissions to access it (“permission to track you across...”)
That’s great news. I wish web browsers did the same.
Safari blocks third-party cookies and many other ways that websites use to track users between websites. A VPN also helps.
Dumb clickbait title aside, while it’s good that Apple is making it easier to opt out of explicit tracking with this and improved tracking prevention in Safari, I think the tracking industry is moving to device fingerprinting and first-party-trackers anyway. Might as well make things a little tougher for them, but the tracking will continue.
Fingerprinting iOS is quite difficult because of the limited amount of permutations of device type/OS version/language available especially considering iOS users are very quick to update to the latest release.
I don't see how this will cripple the industry. Businesses will still spend money on ads; they just won't be able to attribute to any singular ad shown. But do companies still want folks to install their app? You betcha.
It's not the case that advertisers will get the same results, they just won't be able to see/attribute them. Rather, ad platform targeting will be far worse without attribution, and so advertisers won't be able to invest as much in ads while getting the same ROI.
Sometimes it is not just only about money. Or just business tracking.
so just have the ad be to some personalized 3rd party link? seems obvious enough to do.
Finally. :)
Seems possible Apple will announce plans to take a cut of ad revenue once they're the middleman tracking all conversions. I can't imagine they're happy that so much of the money being made off of their users is out of their reach.
