I used systemtap in Ubuntu some years ago. It was also broken first, but upstream was very responsive to provide a fix.

systemtap is really like heart surgery on kernel internals that are not stable. So it is expected that it breaks from time to time.

Systemtap is developed by RH people (unless something has changed). So in RH affiliated distros it should just work. But as said, my experience is that they are willing to help with other distros, too.

Or is there a reported breakage in Ubuntu these days that nobody is reacting on?

don't the instructions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Systemtap work? i'm not asking sarcastically, i haven't tried the instructions but i think i will try it in the future.

The debuginfo aspects of ubuntu/systemtap interop are much improved with debuginfo auto-downloading support in v0.178+ elfutils.
